Bodemvondsten

Secrets of the soil

A green city starts with healthy soil; precondition number 1 for healthy growth. It’s no surprise therefore that the beginning of the spiral showcases our findings. It is simply teeming with life under the city. Anything growing above ground is rooted in the soil where it is fed, watered and supported. But there’s so much more.

In the treasure chest, you’ll discover how much soil life exists in 1m3 of earth. Look at all the layers in the soil, and discover the relationship between the life cycles above and below the ground.

In the compost heap, you can see how to improve the soil. Our green waste contains many valuable substances which we can return to the natural cycle of life. Compost improves the soil structure, ensures better water management and nourishes soil life.

The leaf container shows how nature itself produces healthy soil. If trees are to be kept healthy in an urban area, it is essential that the fallen leaves are left in place. The best form of soil improvement comes from the trees and plants themselves.

Our Floriade garden has been enriched with soil from various Wilde Weelde members. They gave this garden a healthy start by donating a small bucket of soil from a favourite spot or very special garden of their own.
